NetTex Just for Scaly Legs Spray - The 3 in 1 answer to Scaly Legs
Scaly Legs in Chickens - the problem
Scaly Legs is a disease caused by a parasitic mite (known as cnemidocoptes mutans) that burrows under the scales of the legs or feet, where it causes great irritation.
This results in a multiplication of the tissue cells and the secretion of the serum. The scales are raised, and the legs become thickened and have a rough lumpy appearance.
The disease is easily recognised as the mites are evident as tiny white spherical creatures, (approximately 0.5mm in diameter in the early stages). It is highly contagious and affects birds of all ages, although older birds and feathered leg breeds tend to be more susceptible. It is most common in flocks kept on earth or in dry litter runs.
In the early stages it would appear to cause little inconvenience, but should it be neglected the birds lose condition, go lame and have difficulty in perching. In the worst instance mortality may occur.
